How to choose a perfectly natural blush color

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

The natural color of your lips is the most accurate indicator of what color will work best for your cheeks.

Use your bare lips as as a guide when picking out a blush. To bring out a rosy flush, exfoliate lips prior to matching them with a blush color.  We recommend Motives Lip Pumice.  If you don’t have a lip exfoliator: water, gentle face wash and a gentle scrubbing with a wash cloth or towel will help to get rid of dead skin and rev up the blood flow.

Motives Pressed Blush gives an incredibly smooth blending color and long lasting finish.  Try a shade of Pressed Blush, or ask us at Real Venus to create a custom loose mineral blush specifically matched to your lip color.

Avoiding blotchy application of blush

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Walking down the street I see far too many women who’s blush looks more like a roseasia condition than anything else.

Makeup is meant to take focus off of our flaws, not to make us look like we have them!  A lot of times, blotchy blush application can be due to excess oils present in the skin.  Oil  has a tendency to catch onto and absorb blush pigment, accentuating the intensity of the color.

  1. Apply makeup on clean, freshly washed skin.
  2. Before applying powder blush, dust face powder across your cheeks. This will absorb any excess oil and will help diffuse the blush to look softer and smoother when it is applied.
  3. Be gentle with the amount of blush you put on your brush.  Less is more.   It is much easier to build a few layers of blush to the right intensity than to smear a streak of bright pink across your cheek bone.
  4. If you find that your blush still looks too strong, just add a little more face power over the top of the blush to calm it down.

If you are still having problems with blotchy application it is probably due to the quality of your blush.  You may want to look into finding a smoother applying product.  We recommend Motives Pressed Blush.

Easily lighten any lipstick or cream eyeshadow.

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

If you love the color of one of your cream eyeshadows or lipsticks, but wish the color was lighter or less intense, try this trick:

Mix creme concealer with your chosen product for a lighter, creamier finish. The more concealer you add, the lighter it will be.  You can also try a thin, sparing amount of it onto moisturized, exfoliating lips before applying lipstick.  This will also create a softer, lighter look.

Using normal lipstick to create a sheer gloss.

Friday, March 6th, 2009

Do you have a lipstick shade that you wish you had as gloss?  You can create the same look by simply applying the gloss first.

Start by covering your lips before lipstick application with a light coat of clear, long lasting lip gloss.  The gloss will smooth out the texture of your lips, making less of a surface for your lipstick to “grab” on to.  This will cause the color of your lipstick to come off with a much sheerer consistency.

This look does not require lipliner, and you do not need to apply lipstick all the way to the outer edges of your lip line.  Just concentrate the color on the inner area and blot your lips together a few times (without tissue) to softly blend the color over the rest of your lips.

Lightning fast foundation application

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

Are you under the impression that foundation is something to only use when you are doing a more “complete” or heavy makeup look?

If so, let me contradict you.

Here’s why.  Foundation makes a huge difference in how your makeup looks, because it smooths out your skin pigmentation and provides a base for the rest of your makeup that can significantly increase how smoothly your makeup applies and how long it lasts.

Using a brush or sponge to apply foundation can be rather time consuming.  But here is a great way to use a lighter, more sheer version of your foundation that will take virtually seconds to apply:

Put a small amount of foundation in your palm and then squeeze an equal amount of your favorite daily moisturizer into your palm as well.  Blend the foundation thoroughly with your moisturizer and viola!  You’ve got instant tinted moisturizer.  Apply the same way you would apply your moisturizer and make sure you blend it into your skin until it is fully absorbed.

That’s it.  30 second foundation!

Cleanse TWICE

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

If you use anything on your face, or if you have an oily complexion, or have accumulated dirt and bacteria….(which basically ALL of us do after a full day), it is important to cleanse your face TWICE.  That’s right.  Twice.

Why?  Because the first time around only washes off makeup and excess dirt/oil.  The second time around is when your cleanser really gets a chance to absorb into your pores for deep cleaning.

Just be sure you use a gentle, natural cleanser that doesn’t strip your skin of its natural oils.  After cleansing, your skin shouldn’t feel really tight or dry.  If it does, your cleanser is too harsh.

My indispensible cleansing product is the Hydra Derm Deep Cleansing Emulsion by Skintelligence.  This product is safe for even the most extreme cases of sensitive skin.  It does a thorough job of cleansing, leaves your skin feeling soft, and it never strips the skin.  Super kudos to Skintelligence.

Major concealer mistake: Are you guilty?

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

Ideally concealer can be the secret weapon that can make every blemish and dark circle disappear and lift your face. Concealer will make people think you are the most rested person in town (even if you stayed up til 3 am and live on coffee :-) . Unless you are one of the few people lucky enough to have a smooth complexion with no dark circles, concealer is a must.  If I were to only choose three makeup products every morning, concealer would definitely be one of them.  It is that important.  But unfortunately many people either overlook this step, or use the wrong concealers for their skin and end up creating a a mask that ends up POINTING to their flaws instead of masking them.

Here’s a few tips to help you pick the color that will work right for you:

  1. Make sure the concealer matches the skintone color that is in between the upper part of your cheekbone and bottom of your eye-socket bone.
  2. DO NOT use a color that is lighter than your normal skin,.. as this is a flag that will draw attention to that area. This is a mistake many people make.
  3. Apply the concealer with a light, blotting motion using either your finger or a concealer brush.  Do not wipe or smear it on. Once you have applied it, blend, blend, blend the outer edges into the surrounding skin.  You should not be able to tell where your concealer ends and the rest of your face begins.
  4. The concealer texture is important.  It should glide over your skin with smooth color.  It should not easily collect in any creases or catch or magnify your skin texture (most cheap concealers will do this).
  5. Use the concealer sparingly, as the more you use, the more likely it will be to cake, crease, and look unnatural.
  6. After applying, be sure to dust a light amount of powder over the area to set the concealer and take away any shine and extra moisture.

That’s it!  If you’re in a hurry, just add a dusting of sheer blush, a coat of mascara and a natural lip gloss and you’ll have a super fast everyday look that will light up your face.
